‘Officers down’: California police officer dead, 2nd cop hurt in Baldwin Park shooting


A police officer is dead, a second cop is hurt and a third person – a possible suspect – was taken to the hospital following a shooting in Baldwin Park.

What we know:

SkyFOX was over the heavy police presence in the 4000 block of Filhurst Avenue in Baldwin Park around 7:15 p.m. on May 31.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, the Baldwin Park police were responding to an alleged murder in the area.

The police response led to the Baldwin Park officer being killed. The second police officer is recovering at the hospital, Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert López said.

One person was taken into custody from the scene. That person – believed to be the shooting suspect – was also hurt at the shooting scene, according to the LASD Chief Robert Luna.

Luna said the shooting suspect is believed to have killed a civilian prior to allegedly shooting the Baldwin Park police officer to death.

What we don’t know:

Officials have not released the name of the police officer shot and killed.

It is also unknown what prompted the shootings to take place.

The identity of the civilian – a man – shot and killed by the suspect has not been released. It is unknown if the suspect – also a man – is linked to other crimes.
