Matthew Lawrence talks filming wild ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ party scene with Robin Williams

Just pretending to party with the late Robin Williams was truly a good time.

Matthew Lawrence, who played the late comedian’s son in 1993 movie Mrs. Doubtfire, recently explained the party scene that takes place early into the story of a recently divorced man who poses as an elderly, female nanny in order to spend more time with his children.

“That was so much fun, dude,” Lawrence told his brothers Joey and Andy on a recent episode of their Brotherly Love podcast. “First of all, they asked me, ‘What would you like at your party?’ And I said animals. I gave ’em a list of music, and they just made it happen. And then Robin’s like, ‘We’re gonna jump on this table.’ It was kind of just impromptu, ‘We’re gonna jump on this table and dance right now,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, heck yeah. I wanna dance with Robin right now.'”

In addition to Chris (Lawrence), Williams’ character Daniel also shares two daughters, Lydia (Lisa Jakub) and Natalie (Mara Wilson), with his estranged wife, Miranda (Sally Field).

The scene that resulted is a pivotal one that prompts Miranda to decide it’s over between her and her husband, who makes her feel like she’s the only adult around. Like Williams himself, Daniel slips in and out of impressions and doles out joke after joke. He takes on his alter ago after the breakup.

The party, which was tailored to Lawrence’s tastes, was extreme. Farm animals roamed and balloons floated throughout the San Francisco home. As Cypress Hill’s “Jump Around” blared on the stereo, kids jumped on the furniture — one literally swung from the chandelier — and Williams and Lawrence danced on the dining room table.

The scene came up because the Lawrence brothers, who are all actors, were talking about having been nervous or even embarrassed in certain scenes. Matthew was asked about the scene directly, but he said it hasn’t been uncomfortable at all.

“There was actually, nothing about the Mrs. Doubtfire experience, it was all the opposite of that because of [Williams] and [director] Christopher Columbus,” said Lawrence, whose credits also include Boy Meets World and The Hot Chick. “They set this tone where, like, what Robin was doing? You didn’t have any worries; in fact, it pulled you to want to even go further with it.”

Lawrence revealed to Entertainment Weekly in April that not only was Williams the “most brilliant artist” he has ever worked with, but he taught him life lessons about how to have compassion and abstaining from judging others before understanding what they’re going through.

Having struggled with substance abuse, Williams also warned Lawrence from taking that path.

“He really opened up with me, and I’ll never forget it,” Lawrence said. “There were times he would just grab me and he’d be like, ‘Don’t put that stuff in your body. If I could go back and tell myself, this is why I’m telling you, don’t put that stuff in your body.'”

Williams died by suicide in 2014. He was 63.
